Dr. Rick Timms, MD, FACS grew up in Savannah and attended Sewanee: The University of the South, graduating Cum Laude with a B.A. in Religion. He then graduated from the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta before returning to Savannah for his internship and surgical residency at Memorial University Medical Center.

Occupational Health & Aviation Medicine/AME

Dr. Timms entered private practice in 1985. He enjoyed the wisdom and surgical expertise his father, mentor, and friend, Dr. D.W. Timms taught him. His father touched many lives as a skilled and compassionate surgeon prior to his death in 2003. To this day, Dr. Timms follows his father’s example of making patient care his top priority. In the late 1980s, both physicians began serving as Medical Directors and Corporate Physicians for many of Savannah’s largest industries.

Dr. Timms is Board Certified in General Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.  He has lectured on a variety of general surgical topics ranging from ballistics of wounding and impact biomechanics to trauma in pregnancy.

In the early 1990s, Dr. Timms became an FAA Designated Airman Medical Examiner (AME). As a Senior FAA Medical Examiner, Dr. Timms continues to provide services for all classes of airmen, and expedited attention to complex aviation medical issues.

From 1989 to 2008, Dr. Timms served as Trackside Physician for CART/IndyCar Medical Safety Team and Associate Medical Director for ChampCar Racing Teams. This role included emergency crash response and extrication as well as onsite occupational health services for teams, drivers, officials, and permanent staff of the racing organization.
